At the beginning of the year, my father-in-law (Martin) was diagnosed with Motor neurone disease (MND). MND affects the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord that tell your muscles what to do. With MND, messages from these nerves gradually stop reaching the muscles, leading them to weaken, stiffen and waste. MND is life-shortening and there is no cure. It affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. This means it is considered a relatively rare disease.
Myself and seven of my fellow bewts - Darren Hicks, Gareth Maunder, Paul Lenihan, Paul Ridgway, Chris Maunder, Ian Evans and Christian Viggers (each and every one a legend), will take on the Men's Health Survival of the Fittest, 10k obstacle course, in Cardiff on Sunday 24th September. We will be training hard for the event and plan on doing it in the quickest time possible. 100% of the money we raise will be donated to MND Association to support its three priorities of improving care, funding research and raising awareness of just how devastating MND is.
Up until his diagnosis, Martin was one of the fittest people I know, a brilliant cyclist who has climbed the highest peaks in France on numerous occasions, and has cycled for over 40 years. He still continues to be an inspiration in his attitude to life and now cycles (considerably less) with the aid of an electric bike. The Bewts have done this event twice previously for different charities and Martin has been there both times as a spectator to cheer us on. This time, The Bewts will be aiming for the quickest time yet, inspired by Martin's determination to keep going no matter what!
The Survival of the Fittest is a gruelling 10k obstacle course through Cardiff and the Bay. It's a tough race but it’s a lot of fun and brings people together as a team, which is what Martin’s all about... team work and having fun!
Thank you in advance from myself and all the other bewts for any donation you make to this page. We really appreciate your support and hope to raise as much as we can for MND whilst completing the challenge in the best time possible!
